Resort AlexandraVernet les Bains France
The French town of Vernet les Bains is tucked away at the foot of the Pyrenees, close to the Catalan border. During the nineteenth century, Vernet was renowned for its medicinal springs and sources. The then famous Hotel Alexandra was built close to this ‘Kur-ort’. Famous authors such as Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling and André Malraux were regular guests. The hotel flourished on into the twentieth century when princely children from Monaco and Belgium would come to stay. At the close of the last century, however, decline had set in and all that remained of this illustrious Art Nouveau building was an abandoned shell. A commission from a Dutch investor led Dormio Leisure Development to develop a concept of a luxury resort to resuscitate this site. NEXIT was commissioned to renovate existing Hotel Alexandra and design six new pavilions on the mountainside.
